LIEUT. COL. JOHN WASHINGTON, . . . of South Cave, York Co., England, and Westmoreland Co., Va., b. 1633; d. 1679; came to the Colony in 1656, and located in Westmoreland Co.; was a Vestryman of Appomattox Parish, and an Officer in the County Militia; Justice, 1662, and a Burgess, at various times from 1666 to 1677; m. (first) 1658, Anne Pope, dau. of Col. Nathaniel Pope, who was one of the twenty-three freemen of the Grand Inquest in Maryland in 1637; (second) Anne (Gerrard) Broadhurst, wid. of Walter Broadhurst; (third) Frances (Gerrard-Specke-Peyton) Appleton, wid. of Col. Thomas Specke, Col. Valentine Peyton and Capt. John Appleton. Anne and Frances, were the daughters of Dr. Thomas Gerrard, of the King's Council in Maryland, who was banished for taking part in the insurrection of Isaac Fendall, in 1659; in 1650 he patented lands on Virginia, on the west side of Poor Jack Creek.
