BRYAN FAIRFAX, eighth Baron FAIRFAX, b. at Belvoir, 11th Aug. 1736. Served in the French and Indian Wars, 1755-58, under WASHINGTON. m. 1759, Elizabeth CARY, b. 1738, d. 1788, youngest dau. of Col. Wilson CARY of "Ceelys," Va., and settled at "Towlston," Fairfax Co., where his seven children were b. During the Revolutionary War, he was a Loyalist. In 1789, he was admitted to Holy Orders and became Rector of Christ Church, Alexandria, in 1792. In 1793, upon the death of Robert, seventh Lord FAIRFAX, his father's first cousin, the Barony devolved upon him. In 1798, he went to England, and in November of that year addressed a " Petition to the King's Most Excellent Majesty," claiming the " Title & Dignity of Baron FAIRFAX of Cameron." The case was conducted for Lord FAIRFAX by his kinsman, Thomas ERSKINE, afterwards Lord Chancellor, and was heard before the Special Committee of the House of Lords, 25th Apr. 1800. The evidence was concluded on 6th May, and no objection being made by the Attorney-General and the Lord Advocate of Scotland, who appeared on the part of the Crown, "It was moved to resolve that the Petitioner hath made out his claim to the Title, Dignity & Honour of Lord FAIRFAX of Cameron. The same being agreed to, it is ordered that the said Resolution be reported to the House, and on the House resuming, the usual steps were ordered to be taken in consequence." Having established his right of succession to the Barony for himself and his descendants and being duly invested with the dignity, Lord FAIRFAX at once returned to Virginia, where, at his seat, "Mt. Eagle," on the outskirts of Alexandria, he d. on the 7th of Aug. 1802. After losing his first wife in 1778, he m. before Oct. 1780, Jane, dau. of James DONALDSON, a neighboring farmer. She d. 5th July, 1805; her only surviving child, Anne FAIRFAX, b. circa 1783, m. before 1809, Charles J. CATLETT of King George Co., Va., whose great-grandson, Minor Fairfax HEISKELL, m. circa 1890, Mary Fairfax DAVIS, granddau. of Dr. Orlando FAIRFAX, thus uniting the blood of Lord FAIRFAX'S two wives.
