- (1) Zabriskie, George Olin, "The Jan Cornelisen Van Hoorn/Van Horne Family," The American Genealogist, Vol. 46, No. 4 (October 1970), pp. 235, 239-240:
Cornelius G. Van Horne, son of Gerrit Van Horne . . . by his wife Elsie Provoost, was born in New York and baptized there in the Dutch Reformed Church, 1 April 1694, witnesses: David Provoost Jr. and Anna Maria Van Horne (child's paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather). He joined the church on 21 April 1720 as Cornelius van Horne, Gerritz. He was a merchant in New York; served as a major in the militia and as a member of the New York General Assembly. In 1736 he was appointed Mayor of the City of New York by Rip Van Dam, but did not take office as Van Dam had acted without proper authority. In 1739 he was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the Assembly. In 1740 he served on the Commission to settle the boundary dispute between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 1748 a Mr. Van Horne (probably he) was a Commissioner to furnish supplies to militia troops. Williams says he died on 6 May and was buried 8 May 1752 in his 58th year. His will was dated 3 Sept. 1747, proved 11 June 1752 (NYW 4:390 f.). In it he mentions wife Judith; wife Joanna, deceased, her son Gerrit, and other sons Augustus, Cornelius and David. The executors are wife Judith, son Gerrit and brothers-in-law Simon Johnson and Peter Jay. On 4 Oct. 1769, Augustus Van Horne of New York, merchant, was granted administration on his father's estate, "whereas the said Judith and the said Gerrit Van Horne are both dead, and the other executors have resigned." Cornelius married, first, Joanna Livingston, born 10 Dec. 1694, baptized 16 Dec. 1694 at Albany, New York, daughter of Robert Livingston and Alida Schuyler. She joined the New York church on 24 Aug. 1720 by transfer from Albany. She received property at 92 Pearl Street and elsewhere in New York City, and at Saratoga, New York, from her father's estate. She died 16 March 1734 in New York and Cornelius married, second, on 6 April 1735, in the Dutch Church, Judith Jay, born 29 Aug. 1698, baptized in the Dutch Church, 2 Sept. 1698, daughter of Augustus Jay and Anna Maria Bayard. The children by both wives were baptized in the New York Dutch Church.
