Kemble Press, 1912, p. 66. However, the compiler believes that Martha's maiden name was MILLER. Martha's son, Hugh MENDENHALL, is listed in a household headed by John MILLER in the 1880 census of Muskingum Township, Muskingum County, OH. Hugh is listed there as John MILLER's grandson. Assuming that the information in the 1880 census is correct, Hugh MENDENHALL would have been a son of a daughter of John MILLER. [John MILLER had a daughter, Martha, who is listed in John's household in the 1860 census of Muskingum Township, Muskingum County, OH.] Hugh MENDENHALL's father, Arthur MENDENHALL, is listed in the 1880 census of Jackson Township, Muskingum County, OH. Neither Hugh nor Hugh's mother, Martha, is listed with Arthur in the 1880 census. The compiler believes that Martha may have died before the time of the 1880 census, and that Martha's parents took custody of Hugh after the death of his mother. Hugh MENDENHALL is listed in a household headed by James GILCHRIST in the 1900 census of Muskingum Township, Muskingum County, OH. Hugh is listed there as James GILCHRIST's nephew, although Hugh is believed by the compiler to have actually been a nephew of James' wife, Theresa (MILLER) GILCHRIST.
