    • (1) Obituary, Tulsa World, April 11, 2004:

FERRIS - Sue Baier, Beauty Queen, Homemaker, Business Woman and Philanthropist, passed away on April 7, 2004 at the age of 88. Service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2004 (her 89th birthday) in the Rose Chapel at the Boston Avenue United Methodist Church under the direction on Ninde Funeral Home. Visitation will be at Ninde Garden, 3841 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa on Sunday and Monday. Sue Lenora Baier was born in Tucumcari, NM on April 13, 1915 to Ambrose Joseph George Baier and Sarah Agnes Taylor Baier. She spent her early years in Tucumcari, NM, Seward, KS, Wilburton, OK and Mena, AR and received her elementary education at those locations with the assistance of her mother who was also a School Teacher. She moved to Wichita, KS at the age of 15 and attended North High School where she graduated in May, 1933. Sue entered the Wichita Eagle's Miss Wichita Beauty Contest in the summer of 1933 and at the young age of 18 years won the crown along with an all expenses paid trip to Chicago to see the bright lights of the city and to mingle with the Flapper Girls of the day. It was at this contest that her husband of 69 years, Craig, first saw her and claimed that she was the girl he wanted to marry. They were married about a year later on September 9, 1934 just prior to moving to Norman where Craig attended graduate school at the University of Oklahoma and Sue worked at the town tavern as a waitress. Sue and Craig departed Norman, OK in the fall of 1936 and loaded all their belongings in a Model A Ford and drove to Bay City, TX where Craig began his lifelong career as a Geophysicist. Sue accompanied Craig as he worked in the field on geophysical crews covering territory from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada until 1943 when they moved to Tulsa. During this time they truly lived the nomadic life of "doodlebuggers" and lived in no fewer than 40 locations. Sue once stated that she wished she had a nickle for every dirty apartment she had cleaned. Sue and Craig's sons, Craig Jr. and Jon, were born on the doodlebug trail in Louisiana and Kansas in the years 1938 and 1940 respectively. In September, 1943 Craig, Sue, E.V. and Corine McCollum founded the E.V. McCollum & Company, a geophysical contracting partnership. This partnership operated gravity and seismic crews in North America, South America and Africa for 37 years until 1980 when the partnership was dissolved. Craig spent long days on the road visiting crews and "putting out fires" and once told Sue "I'm afraid that you have raised our sons mostly on your own." Craig and Sue founded GraviMetrics, Inc. in 1980, a company that remained open into the year 2004. Sue's hobbies involved travel, gardening, orchard growing and lapidary work. Sue and Craig enjoyed many cruises and trips around the world. Sue spent her 70th birthday in one of the Emperor's palaces in Beijing, China. She particularly enjoyed cruises to Alaska and Scandinavia. Sue and Craig also traveled to Hawaii, England, Ireland, Wales, Spain, Germany, Austria, Russia and Australia. The "Susie-Q Lapidary Studio" was created in 1978 and was named in her honor. Many close friends were the recipients of clocks and bolo ties from this lapidary studio. Sue was also most generous in sharing with her friends in Sunday School Class the beautiful orchards that she and Craig grew. Sue and Craig became members of the Friendly Couples Class at Boston Avenue Church in 1943 and remained faithful members of that class until it disbanded in the year 2000. Sue was a faithful member of her church for 61 years and was a long time member of Circle F of the United Methodist Women. She was also a Choir Mother for many years and assisted her husband, Craig, when he served as Chairman of the Commission on Missions, focusing primarily on Bolivia and South America. Sue accompanied Craig when they traveled to Cochabomba, Bolivia to visit the Boston Avenue Church Missionary, Murray Dickson in the 1950's. Sue was also a Cub Scout Den Mother to her 2 Cub Scouts. Sue was a charter member of the Tulsa Geological and Geophysical Auxiliary, an organization that celebrated its Golden Anniversary on February 28, 2004. Sue greatly loved this fellowship of ladies and was most disappointed to have missed this event due to failing health. Sue was also a longstanding member of the TGGA 20-Bridge Club and loved to meet and play bridge with this particular group of friends. Sue served many years on the Board of the Tulsa Chapter of the American Cancer Society and was once President of the Tulsa Chapter. Sue was also an active, longstanding member and past President of the Amber Rotary Anns Club of Tulsa and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Sue enjoyed golf and was in a TGGA bowling league for many years. Sue is survived by: her son, Jon; daughter-in-law, Linda of Tulsa; and granddaughters, Jennifer of Irving, TX and Sarah of Tulsa. Other survivors are her 2 older sisters, Mary Irma Wassall of Wichita, KS and Anna Katherine Wise of Brawley, CA. Sue is also survived by her nieces, Norma Virginia Smyth of Brawley, CA, Evelyn Addis and Catherine Juanita Stanley of Los Angeles, CA, Betty Nelson of Waterville, OH and Ruth Murray of Greenbrook, NJ. Her husband of 69 years, Craig, passed away on January 14, 2004 and her oldest son, Craig Jr., passed away on May 5, 2003. Her younger brother, George Wayne Baier, passed away in 1995. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Frances Willard Home (Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 1301 S. Boston, Tulsa, OK 74119), the Amber Rotary Anns Nursing Scholarship Fund (Rotary Club of Tulsa, 616 S.
