      FISKE JOHN
      Surgeon and Apothecary
      fl. 1763-1773

      . . . 27 August 1768 was advertised:

["]A Freehold Messuage or Dwelling House, with Kitchen, Brewhouse, Pump and large Stable to the same belonging, situate in the parish of ALL SAINTS in Colchester in the occupation of John Fiske, surgeon and apothecary. Enquire Thomas Daniel, attorney. . . .

["]N.B. There is a Back-way or Passage for Chaises and Horses to and from the Stable.["]

This was no. 73 High Street next Thomas Boggis . . . (Minories) and Boggis then bought the property (from the wife of a Head Street gunsmith) which he required in order to complete extensions and alterations to his own house. Fiske moved to 28 High St. Both Fiske and Boggis were members of Colchester Corporation. Fiske was Chamberlain of Colchester 1763-1772 and had been named Assistant in the 1763 Charter, voting for Rebow and Gray in 1768 (cf. Robert Fiske voting Whig in 1741). He was elected Alderman on 20 August 1771 in opposition to his neighbour, Boggis. Fiske received 55 votes to Boggis' 10. Boggis came last of 4 candidates, and though later twice serving as Mayor there are signs he was unpopular at this time.

Fiske moved in 1772 to the 'old accustomed Apothecary's shop' (cf Jordan Lisle . . . who had the shop from at least 1748) at 28 High Street, St Runwald (Rated 20, Lisle occ., in 1770, Widow Fiske in 1775 and Robert Harris in 1780).

John Fiske also diversified into inoculation. In partnership with (Cater?) Day he took over John Franklyn's . . . inoculating house at Mile End in 1767. . . . On 28 March 1771 . . . he advertised inoculations in a house pleasantly situated, charging 2-3 gns. On 20 March 1773 he claimed to have inoculated 99 persons that year with no ill effects and good pustules. (14 of Ardleigh, 11 Berechurch, 19 Langham etc., only 6 of Colchester.)

He married Mary Agnis the daughter of Robert Agnis gardener. . . . He took two apprentices, John Alefounder for £45 in 1767 . . . and William Frost . . . later of Kelvedon for £20 in 1763. . . .

He died on 26 September 1773 . . . 'Surgeon and Alderman of Colchester'. His will (made 25 September 1773, proved 7 October 1773 . . . ) left all his properties in Lawford and Colchester in trust to Revd Thomas Stanton DD . . . of Colchester (the nonconformist minister at Stockwell Chapel) and his father-in-law Robert Agnis, to pay the rents to his 'dear and well deserving wife, Mary' while she remained a widow, for the maintenance of herself and their children, the monies to be divided equally between the children after her death. Stanton and Agnis were named executors and guardians of the children.
