HENRY MEISER . . . , son of Johann Michael Meiser . . . and Anna Elizabeth Sixt (thought to be Zecht), was born at Millbach in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, ca. 1728. He died in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, ca. August 7, 1801.
The burial place has not been determined although it is probably in a section of the cemetery at Grubb's (Bottschofts) [Gospel] Church where the ravages of time have destroyed the headstones.
Henry married Anna Maria _____ before July 5, 1764, as on this date he and Anna Mary baptized a son, John Michael, at Millbach, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. No records have been found of her [Anna Mary's] parentage, birthdate, birthplace, death date, death place or burial place.
Henry was reared at Millbach, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and on April 9, 1763 he was granted a warrant for 63 acres, 118 perches of land in then Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, later Northumberland County, and now Snyder County, Pennsylvania. In ca. 1772 he was listed in Penns Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, as additional resident. On June 29, 1773 he took up an additional 110 acres, 161 perches of land in the same locality. He was first taxed in Penns Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1772, but it is believed that he lived there a year or two before. His land holdings extended along both sides of Mahantango Creek from south of the present village of Meiserville, north to near the village of Shadle. By 1793 his combined land holdings totaled over 470 acres.
When he first arrived with his personal effects and family in a two horse wagon, he built a bark hut but on three different occasions was forced to move away because of the unfriendliness of the Indians. On one occasion he placed his children in a chaff-bag (bed tick), put them on the back of a horse and went down the river to the present village of New Buffalo to escape from the ravages of the Indians. A temporary fort for the protection and refuge of the settlers had been erected there. On one occasion the Indians took the baking bread from the outdoor oven, and on another, an angry Indian appeared at the cabin, during the absence of Henry Meiser. Mrs. Meiser gave him things to eat, but he went away in a sullen mood. When Henry returned to the cabin, he took up the trail of the Indian. A fight ensued, and the Indian lost his life.
Henry was a great hunter. He had a deer lick in a swamp near his home, and it is said that his larder seldom lacked venison. One day a pair of panthers passed near their cabin, and he followed them, killing one. That night the other returned to the cabin, seeking its mate, and he shot it through the porthole in the cabin wall.
In 1775 he was a road supervisor for Penns Township. In this same year, Henry Meiser was a private soldier in the Heidelberg Company, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, under Captain George Hudson. . . . He lived in that part of Penns Township, which later became Mahantango Township - 1796. In that year he was assessed with land, personal property and a sawmill located just north of the present village of Meiservile. This was one of the first sawmills in the section and is still operating today (1972) under diesel power rather than water power. The mill race still leads water under the mill. The village of Meiserville, Pennsylvania, was named for this Henry.
Henry died in Mahantango Township, and his will was probated in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, on August 7, 1801. His wife and son John Michael . . . were co-executors of his will. The will lists the following children: Mary Elizabeth, Catharina, Barbara, John Michael, Philip, Henry, George, Frederick and Andrew.
Andrew was one of the first children baptized at the old Zion Lutheran Church, north of Freeburg, in 1781.
