Joseph Dorris, 1768-1810
Joseph Dorris only appeared a few times in the public record. He first showed up on the Hardy County tax rolls in 1791 and appeared again in 1792, 1794 and 1795. He did not appear on the tax rolls in 1796 indicating that he had already left Virginia and was likely in Kentucky by this time. His son Joseph Dorris Junior enlisted in the US Army in 1814 and was he recorded his birth as having been in Kentucky in 1797.
Samuel Dorris Senior first appeared in Hardy County tax rolls in 1789. On that tax list he listed for white free holders, indicating that there were two men over the age of 21 in the household. At that time two of Samuel's sons, William and John, were already married. We know that Samuel Dorris Junior and Isaac Dorris Henderson married somewhat later, indicating that Joseph Dorris was already of age in 1789 and was born in 1768 or earlier.
Joseph Dorris next appeared in the public record in 1809 on the Christian County, Kentucky tax rolls. The next year he was still in Christian County and the Census indicated that he had four sons and three daughters. We have no information on the name of his wife but there may be a record of their marriage in Hardy County. We believe that Joseph Dorris had the following children:
• William - 1788-18??; married Mary Tyree 1816.
• Samuel - 1795-18??; married Ann Howton 1815.
• Joseph Dorris - 1797-1851; married Mary Lart 1816.
• John Dorris - 1800-185?; married Allizer Tyree 1824.
• Margaret Dorris Kieley - 1802-185?; married John Kieley 1820.
• Elizabeth Dorris Howton - 1809-185?; married Samuel Howton 1826.
• ? born between 1800-1810.
