    • (1) Thompson, Neil D., "The English Origin of Sergeant Francis Nichols of Stratford, Connecticut," The American Genealogist, Vol. 75 (October 2000), pp. 267-271:

An assertion that Sergeant Francis Nichols, who settled in Stratford. Connecticut, prior to 10 October 1639, was a brother of Lieutenant-Governor Richard Nichols of New York, was effectively demolished seven years ago in this journal. The International Genealogical Index [IGI] indicates that the family originated in or around Chelmsford, co. Essex; however, alleged baptismal dates for two of the Sergeant's sons at Chelmsford have proved to be fabrications. A further search in a different part of England has now uncovered the baptism and marriage of the Sergeant and baptisms for all but the last three of his children.

Of two Nichols wills made prior to the commencement of the registers of the parish of Sedgeberrow, co. Worcester, one appears to be that of the grandfather of the emigrant. Thomas Nycholls of Sedgeberrow, husbandman, whose will was dated 27 November 1558 and proved on 4 April 1559, mentioned sons William, John, Henry and Nicholas Nichols, daughters Julyan and Margery [married names not given], and son-in-law James Alyson. A John Nycholls was also a witness to this will. The testator's wife Elynor and son William were appointed executors.

On the assumption, based largely on the pattern of Christian names given to the children and grandchildren of John Nichols, father of the emigrant, that this is the correct identification, the family may be reconstructed. . . .

FRANCIS NICHOLS . . . was baptized at Sedgeberrow, co. Worcester, on 25 May 1575; he died before 8 January 1650/1. He settled at Stratford, Connecticut, by 10 October 1639, when he was appointed sergeant of the Stratford trainband, and that same year was listed with his three sons (John, Isaac, and Caleb) among the seventeen first settlers of Stratford.

Francis Nichols married first at Sedgeberrow on 24 January 1599/1600, "FRANCIS" WIMARKE. She was baptized there on 2 November 1577 and probably died before the family's removal to New England. She was a daughter of Robert Wimarke of Sedgeborrow. Francis Nichols married secondly about 1649 as her first husband, ANN WINES. She was born say 1632 and was living on 4 March 1693/4, daughter of Barnabas and Ann (Eddy) Wines of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, who after his death married second, John Elton, third, John Tooker, and fourth, John Youngs Esq., all of Southold.

Children of Francis and Frances (Wimarke) Nichols, all but the youngest bp. at Sedgeberrow, co. Worcester:

      i JOHN NICHOLS, bp. 16 May 1601, d. Fairfield, Conn., before 19 June 1655, when his estate inventory was taken; m. (1) _____, (2) GRACE _____. Issue.

ii JANE NICHOLS, bp. 3 Nov. 1603, living Hempstead, N.Y., 16 Feb 1666/7; m. co. Worcester (probably Bengeworth), about 1625, WILLIAM WASHBURN, bp. Bengeworth, 9 Nov. 1601, d. before 11 June 1659 when his will was proved, son of John and Martha (Timbrell) (Stevens) Washburn. Issue. The marriage is proven by the reference in the will of their son John Washburn of Hempstead to his uncle Isaac Nichols of Stratford (See no. x below.)

iii HENRY NICHOLS, bp. 19 Nov. 1605, bur. 21 Dec. 1606.

iv ANNE NICHOLS, bp. 18 Oct. 1606, bur. 25 Oct. 1606.

v MARGARET NICHOLS, bp. 4 Jan. 1608/9; no further record found.

vi FRANCIS NICHOLS, bp. 25 Aug. 1611; no further record found.

vii JOSEPH NICHOLS (twin), bp. 31 Aug. 1614, bur. 2 Sept. 1614.

viii JONATHAN NICHOLS (twin), bp. 31 Aug. 1614, bur. 4 Sept. 1614.

ix SARAH NICHOLS, bp. 12 Nov. 1615; m. probably at Wethersfield, Conn., by 1641, as his 1st wife, RICHARD MILLS of Wethersfield, Stratford, and Stamford, Conn., and of Southampton and Westchester, N.Y. He was living 18 June 1663.

It has long been accepted that Richard Mills m. a daughter of Francis Nichols, but her first name has been unknown. The Sedgeberrow records indicate that the daughters Margaret and Sarah are the only reasonable candidates, and Margaret appears to be too old for the marriage.

x ISAAC NICHOLS, b. say 1620, d. between 28 Sept. 1694 and 5 Nov. 1695, the dates that his will was executed and proven; m. MARGERY _____. She has been called a WASHBURN, apparently because of the reference in the will of John Washburn to his uncle Isaac Nichols; this possibility is made unlikely by the baptism of Jane Nichols at an appropriate time to be the Jane who m. William Washburn. (See no. ii above.) Issue.

xi CALEB NICHOLS, b. say 1623, d. Woodbury, Conn., between 14 Aug. 1690, when he executed his will, and 27 Jan. 1690/1, when the inventory of his estate was taken; m. ANNE WARD, who d. 23 July 1718 "in the 98th yeare of her age," daughter of Andrew Ward. Issue.

Child of Francis and Ann (Wines) Nichols:

xii ANN NICHOLS (again), b. about 1650; m. by 4 Feb. 1677/8, CHRISTOPHER YOUNGS of Southold, b. Salem, Mass., 2 12m [Feb.] 1643/4, d. Southold, 5 Dec. 1698, son of Christopher and Priscilla (Elvin) Youngs. Issue.

Nichols, Francis. Sergt., Stratford Trainband, Oct. 1639.

It should hardly be necessary to refute the foolish assertion that he was brother of Gov. Richard Nicolls of New York, though he may have been related to that family. He was one of the founders of Stratford in 1639, where the Conn. General Court placed him in charge of military affairs. He d. abt. 1650; Inv. in Stratford, 1655.

Married (1) _____; m. (2) Anne Wines, dau. of Barnabas of Southold, L. I.; she m. (2) John Elton of Southold, (3) Capt. John Tooker, and (4) abt. 1691, Christopher Youngs, 2d.
