    • (1) Porter, Harold F., Jr., "The Paternal Ancestry of Thomasine Frost, Wife of Deacon Edmund Rice of Sudbury, Mass.," The American Genealogist, Vol. 63, No. 3 (July 1988), pp. 129-131:

In "The Strutt Ancestry of Thomasine Frost, Wife of Edmund Rice of Sudbury, Mass." (TAG 61:161-66), I recorded the results of a search for Thomasine's maternal ancestors. Meanwhile, further research, still mainly by Dr. Joanna Martin of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, has shed some light on her paternal ancestry. Thomasine has long since been identified by Mary Lovering Holman as a daughter of Edward Frost, clothier, of Stanstead, co. Suffolk (TAG 10:227). We know now that Edward's father was John Frost of Glemsford and Hartest, both co. Suffolk, son of William Frost of Glemsford, and that his mother was Ann Scott, daughter of Richard Scott, clothier, also of Glemsford. These discoveries also reveal that Thomasine (Frost) Rice was apparently a cousin of Richard Scott of Providence, R.I. . . .

As with Thomasine's maternal forebears, wills provide most of our biographical information about her paternal ancestors. All probate and parish records cited below are at the Suffolk Record Office, Bury St. Edmunds Branch, hereafter SRO Bury, Schoolhall St., Bury St, Edmunds, IP33 IRX, England.

WILLIAM FROST of Glemsford, co, Suffolk, died there between 5 July and 15 Sept. 1549, the dates that his will was executed and proved. He married PHILIPPA _____. She married second at Glemsford on 15(?) Sept. 1552, John Webb of Lidgate [about eight miles from Glemsford], co. Suffolk, whose wife Rose had been buried at Lidgate on 11 Feb. 1551[/2]. John and Philippa (_____) (Frost) Webb had a daughter Anna baptized there on 17 July 1553. Philippa was buried at Lidgate on 20 Jan. 1557[/8] and John on 25 July 1558. William Frost appears on the Glemsford subsidy list for 1524, when he was taxed two shillings on £4 (Suffolk Green Books, No. X [Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1910] p. 33). An abstract of his will, proved at the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury, follows (ref. Coole 536):

["]WILL[IA]M FROST of Glemesford [sic], [co. Suffolk], 5 July 1549. Sick in body. To be buried in the churchyard of Glemesford. For tithes forgotten 11s. Son Roger to have profits and usage of hall lands for 4 years on condition that 'he see Henry my sonne relevyd w[i]t[h] meate drinke and apparell at skole or to see hym sett to a good service.' Son Roger to keep house in repair during 4 years. Roger to have plow, cart, 15 head of beasts and bullocks and 40 sheep. To 'John my myddell sonne' my tenement and lands that were Strutts except one 'pightell called Rawlyns,' and one piece of land lying in Melfed and a piece of pasture called Rogylles pastures, to him for 4 years. To him 'at his entryaunce' [apparently into possession], 2 horses, 5 head of cattle, 15 sheep. 'And after thentraunce of the sayd John my myddell sonne into hys tenement and Land to hym geven,' he shall pay to my wife Phyllip 40 shillings a year of the said £5; he also to find 'hys mother' fyre wood. To 'my yonger sonne John' at the age of 26 years my tenement called Rogilles with 'Rogylles' pasture, 'Rawlings pightell,' and a meadow of an acre. 'And that yonge John shall have hys ease allwayes to carrye and Dryve to hys grounds over olde Johns lands,' said John to pay his brother old John rent of 10s. a year. To son young John a bullock and 5 sheep; to son Henry when he reaches age of 26, 2 meadows at Sedmell and Newcroft. If son Roger pays 40 marks within 1 year after Henry reaches 26, then Roger 'shall have yt.' To son Roger 'after the Dethe of his mother' 6 silver spoons. To Jonas Woods my acre of land in Melfyld that I bought of Stynte, at age of 26, or £4 which son Roger shall pay him for it. If Jonas die before he reaches 26, son Roger shall pay my 3 daughters' children the said £4. To John Wood the new house at Struts where he dwells now, for 3 years, paying for reparations 3s. 4d. yearly. To Roger Rysbye my tenement called Rogell with the yard except Rawlins, he to pay 22d. a year for reparations for 3 years. To my 3 daughters the debts due me by Stephen Tonye and Wyll[ia]m Merchall. To daughters Awdrye and Jane each a 'seme' of barley [i.e., seam, which, when used as a measurement of a grain, equals 8 bushels]. To my sister Jurdon a quarter of barley and a combe of wheat. If wife remarries, she is not to have her dwelling or beasts kept [as above] but shall have yearly £6 to be paid to her by 2 eldest sons Roger and John, Roger to pay her £3 13s. "and John my eldest sonne" 46s, 8d. Executors: sons Roger and Henry. Wife Phyllip to have half my household stuff. To wife Phyllip 2 of my best bed[s].

      "Witnesses: Robert Stanshye, Giles Fyrman."

William Frost's will shows that he had more than one son named John, to whom he refers confusingly as "olde John," "my myddell sonne John," "my eldest sonne John," "my yonger sonne John," and "yonge John." Since William leaves "John my myddell sonne" certain lands excluding "one pightell named Rawlyns" and "Rogylls pasture," which he leaves to "yonge John" with the right "allwayes to carrye and Dryve to hys grounds over olde Johns lands," we know that "olde John" and "myddell John" are identical. Hence, "my eldest sonne John" surely means the elder of the two Johns.

The will is explicit that Roger and "olde" or "mydell" John were the two oldest sons. I infer that both had reached the age of 26, and it is clear that Henry and "yonge John" had not. The testator had three daughters, but he names only two of them (Audrey and Jane). Other references appear to suggest relationships, certainly "Sister Jurdon" and possibly Jonas and John wood; like Henry and "yonge John," Jonas was not to receive his legacy until he reached 26.

Children (FROST) of William, order uncertain:

i ROGER, "my eldest sonne" in his father's will, which also called him one of the two "eldest sonnes."

ii JOHN, "olde John" or "myddell John." One of his father's two eldest sons, but since he was also called "myddell John," Roger must be the older of the two.

iii JOHN, called "yonge John" in his father's will (5 July 1549) and mentioned therein as under 26.

iv HENRY, under 26 on 5 July 1549 (father's will).

      v AUDREY.

      vi JANE.

vii Another daughter, name not given in father's will.

      (2) Threlfall, John Brooks, Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England and Their Origins, Westminster, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 2008, pp. 99-100:

WILLIAM FROST of Glemsford, county Suffolk, England, was probably born about 1495-1500. His wife was named Philippa. William died in the summer of 1549, testate. After his death, his widow remarried on 15 September 1552 at Glemsford, John Webb of Lidgate, which is about eight miles from Glemsford. He was a widower, his wife Rose having been buried at Lidgate on 11 February 1551/2. John and Philippa (_____) (Frost) Webb had a daughter, Anna, baptized in 1553, so it is apparent that Philippa was probably born after 1508, Philippa was buried at Lidgate on 20 January 1577/8 and John Webb on 25 July 1558.

      William Frost
Birth: 1495, Glemsford, Babergh District, Suffolk, England
Death: 1549 (aged 53-54), Glemsford, Babergh District, Suffolk, England
Burial: St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Glemsford, Babergh District, Suffolk, England

William Frost was born in England, probably at Glemsford, Suffolk, just before 1500. Around 1520, he married a woman whose name is unknown. William was a yeoman, or farmer, but he had extensive land holdings and was quite prosperous. William had two sons named John who lived to be adults, which would usually mean that he had more than one wife, and a son named John with each one. William's will indicates that his two older sons, Roger and 'olde' John, were over 26 in 1549 and born before 1523. His younger sons, 'yonge' John and Henry, were younger than 26, probably a lot younger. This would indicate that Roger and 'olde' John were the sons of his unknown first wife, and 'yonge' John and Henry were the sons of his wife at the time the will was written, Phillippa, whom he probably married in Glemsford around 1530. Phillippa's family name has not been found. William wrote his will on July 5, 1549 and it was proved on September 15 of the same year at Glemsford. He gave the names of four sons and two daughters in his will, but indicated he had three daughters. William, as he specified in his will, was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Glemsford.

William's widow Phillippa later married John Webb of nearby Lidgate and had a daughter baptised there in 1553. That further cements the proposition that William had two wives. If Phillippa was his only wife, she had a child in about 1520, and another in 1553, not impossible, but highly unlikely. Phillippa was buried in Lidgate on January 20, 1558.
