Others in attendance were John Littler, Thomas Oldham, Joshua Littler, Mary Gowles, Samuel Littler, Susana Oldham, John Minshall, Mary Littler, Alexander Ross, Mary Oldham, William Smith, John Walter, Martha Walter, Jane Smith, Chrislia Musgrove, Elizabeth Musgrove, Mary Leonard, Roger Dyer, George Leonard, Moses Musgrove, Aron Musgrove, Robert Green, Ann Green, Katherine Leonard, Mary Woodrow, Rachell Moor, Margret Miller, Hannah Jones, Jane Jones, Mary Pierce, Mary Miller, Mary Jones, Morgan Jones, Caleb Pierce, Andrew Moore, Andrew Baxter, Samuell Miller, David Nickols Samuel Jones, Francis Jones, Isaac Woodrow and Samuel Jones. John and William Hiet/Hyet/Hyatt/Hiatt (probably son and brother of John Hyet of Chester County, Pennsylvania) who had first moved just north to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; subsequently, all three of them had moved to Orange County, Virginia by 1734 when John Jr. (John Sr. by 1751) had 300 acres of land surveyed by James Wood on 28 November 1734. He received a patent from the Colony for this land on 12 November 1735. . . . This tract is located on the west side and along Opequon Creek (served by present-day Berkeley County, West Virginia Highway 19) and adjacent Stephen Hollingsworth?s patent land on the east side of Opequon. John Hiatt and his wife Margaret sold this 300-acre patent land, along with an adjacent 77-acre Fairfax grant land received on July 1761, to William Burns for 500 pounds on 2 May 1763. [Note by compiler: In John's patent dated 12 November 1735, his name is shown as "John Hyet, Jr.," and he is described as being "of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania."] On 17 April 1737, John purchased the eastern 200-acre part of Hollingsworth patent land on the east side of Opequon Creek . . . and a Fairfax grant of 659 acres was issued on 6 July 1761, which included the 200 acres plus 159 acres surplus (the 200 acres actually being 359 acres) and 300 acres adjacent east of the patent land. A Warrant for this 659 acres was issued by the Proprietors Office on 4 April 1751 with John Hyatt (now Senior). On 31 May 1756, John Hiatt and his wife Margaret sold the 200-acre Hollingsworth patent land to John Jude for 235 pounds, being the only part of the 659 acres to which he had a clear title. After receiving the Fairfax grant on 6 July 1761 for the 659 acres, John and his wife Margaret (then of Hampshire County) sold the total tract containing 659 acres to John Judy/Jude on 3 August 1762 for 500 pounds. This tract of land extends east to present-day Kearneysville with Jefferson County, West Virginia Highway 1 (Philadelphia Road) along its southeast line. John and Margaret probably lived on the 200-acre patent land as they had asked the Orange County Court for a view of improvements on 26 October 1738. On 2 October 1762, John received a Fairfax grant for 91 acres of land on Sandy Lick Branch of Great Cacapheon (Cacapon River). His sons George, James, Evan and Jonathan (all of Hampshire County) each received Fairfax grants in 1766 on Hyatts Branch/Run, Sandy Ridge, south of the forks of Cacapon to North River Mills. John Hiatt Sr.?s (of Hampshire County) will was proved on 4 December 1764 (written 3 January 1764) listing the following sons: eldest George, John, William, Joseph, Evan, James, Jonathan, Timothy and Nathan. The daughters listed were: Catherine Harrel, Mary Edwards, Ann Harris, Margaret Craven, Martha, Ruth and Sarah His wife Margaret Hiatt was appointed Executrix and had remarried James Sargent [Largent] by 4 April 1769. On 28 April 1760, son George Hiatt of Rowan County, North Carolina sold a tract of land containing 272 acres that he had received a Fairfax grant for on 5 April 1751. It was located on David?s Run of North River and Great Waggon Road in Hampshire County, about five miles southwest of the forks of Cacapon. Hiatt sold the 272-acre tract to John Hiatt Senior of Rowan County, North Carolina; witnesses were Thomas Edwards, Mary Edwards and Jeremiah Ham. On 14 April 1752, son John Hiatt Jr (b. 1725 c.) had a survey made of 345 acres (where he lived) for which he received a Fairfax grant on 27 March 1761. The tract lay adjacent east of Evan Thomas? 1,014-acre patent land at the north end. . . . On 28 March 1761, he received another Fairfax grant for 126 acres adjacent south of his 345-acre grant. On 18 September 1761, John Jr. and wife Mary (formerly of Frederick County, Virginia, but later of Orange County, North Carolina) sold their 345-acre grant land, and also 40 acres which had been purchased on 28 September 1755 from Enos Thomas (son of Evan Thomas, deceased) and was part of the 1,014-acre patent land to John Cunningham and Thomas Cunningham for 100 pounds. On 25 September 1761, they sold their 126-acre grant land to Enos Thomas for 12 pounds. At Hopewell Meeting House (Quaker) in Frederick County, Virginia, John Hiatt and James McGrew were appointed on 4 February 1748 to inquire into Richard Merchants? claims to a certificate of removal to North Carolina, or elsewhere. Evan Hiett, son of John (b. 1700 c.), remained in Hampshire County where his will was proved on 9 February 1815 (written 1 August 1809) listing his wife Sarah and 10 children; Joseph, John, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Martha and Mary. Jonathan Hiatt and wife Mary of Fayette County, Kentucky sold land on Terry?s Run in Orange County, Virginia in 1795. On 17 November 1735, William Hiatt (b. 1695 c.), from Pennsylvania, had James Wood and John Smith, Deputy Surveyor, survey 250 acres on Opequon Creek. . . . This tract, served on the south by present-day Jefferson County Highway 1/10 and Berkeley County Highway 28/5, is about one mile west of Middleway on the north. He sold 200 acres of the surveyed 250-acre tract described above to Edward Thomas, who sold to Richard Fowler, who sold to Walter Briscoe, who sold to Thomas Lindsey. Richard Fowler applied for a warrant from the Proprietors office for this tract which was included within a 405-acre tract (?where Fowler lives east side of Opechon Creek?) with a 2 August 1750 warrant date and a 12 October 1750 survey date. He also applied for a second tract which was surveyed on 12 October 1751 ?for 399 acres on west side of Opechon Creek where he (Fowler) lives and has Large Improvements.? On 14 March 1755, Fowler received a Fairfax grant . . . for the 405 acres which was now 437 acres; subsequently, Lindsey received a Fairfax grant for the same land . . . on 31 March 1761. Fowler received a Fairfax grant . . . for the 399acre tract on 17 January 1755 while Lindsey?s Fairfax grant for the same land was on 30 March 1761. In September 1770, Thomas Marshall (Surveyor of Frederick County) surveyed this 250-acre tract which actually contained 329 acres. Among others, George, John, Isaac and James Hyett laid claim to part of this land under the proprietary deed to Thomas Lindsey. William purchased 90 acres from John Smith on 6 June 1738, having been assigned same by John Hampton Jr., Smith?s co-owner of the land. . . . William received three Fairfax grants; 184 acres adjacent north of John Smith?s patent land on 26 June 1751 . . . ; 195 acres ?where he lives? adjacent south of Smith?s patent land on 24 June 1751; and 400 acres adjacent south of his 195-acre grant land on 30 October 1754. His son George received a Fairfax grant for 292 acres adjacent south of the 400 acres on 3 September 1766 and between them, running from the south line of George?s land to the north line of William?s, totaling almost four miles of land. William Hiatt?s will was proved on 4 March 1767 (written 28 February 1763) listing sons; eldest George, Simon, William, James, Isaac and John. His listed daughters were; Catherine Hiatt, Rebecca Edwards (husband Joseph Edwards, b. 1718) and Mary Hiatt. There were other children mentioned but not named, probably children by his current wife Alice Lowden who he married after appearing at ?Hopewell Monthly Meeting at Opechon the fourth day, second month (April) A.D. 1748.? John Hiatt, Isaac Hiatt and his wife Martha Hiatt and James Hiatt of South Carolina sold 355 acres of their father William?s grant land on 15 February 1776 to Jacob and Abraham Roads. Isaac and John Hiatt?s certificate of membership from Hopewell Monthly Meeting (Quakers) in Frederick County, Virginia was transferred to New Garden Monthly Meeting in North Carolina on the 7th day, 9th month 1772. Their brother James received his certificate on the 1st day, 1st month 1776. William Hiatt (b. 1720 c.) received the 195-acre grant land of 24 June 1751 through his father William?s will; he later sold it to Simeon Hiatt on 9 March 1785. George Hiatt?s will was proved in Berkeley County on 19 June 1787 and Simon?s (Simeon) on 25 June 1798. Charles and Peter Hyatt, who appear briefly in the records of Orange County, Virginia as living on the northern part of Opequon Creek, were from Prince George['s] County, Maryland on the Patuxent River in the 1720's. (4) Frederick County, Virginia, Hopewell Friends History [database online], Orem, UT: Ancestry.com, 1997: In the State Land Office at Richmond are to be found recorded in Book 16, pages 315-415, inclusive, the patents issued to the settlers who came to the Shenandoah Valley under authority of the Orders in Council made to Alexander Ross and Morgan Bryan. All bear date of November 12, 1735, and recite that the grantee is one of the seventy families brought in by them, and excepting location and acreage, are alike in wording and conditions, and are signed by William Gooch, Lieutenant-Governor of the Colony at that time. . . . These patents were issued under the seal of the colony and were grants from the Crown, free of any obligation of feudal services to the Fairfax family, who claimed the land as lords proprietors of the Northern Neck of Virginia. The sixth Lord Fairfax, who later established his home at Greenway Court near Winchester, instituted many suits against early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, but it does not appear that any Friend who claimed under Ross and Bryan was ever ejected from his land. Although it is specifically stated that seventy families have been "by them brought in to our said Colony and settled upon the Lands in the said Order mentioned," only thirty-six patents issued to thirty-four grantees have been found. The names of these grantees are here given, together with sundry information gathered from the minutes of various Friends' meetings, from the records of the counties of Orange and Frederick in Virginia, and Chester County, Pennsylvania. . . . John Hiatt Jr., 300 acres. No further information of certain character concerning this man appears, though various persons by the name of Hiatt (Hiett) were in the Shenandoah Valley and adjacent sections at later periods. At Hopewell, February 4, 1748, Ja. MaGrew and Jno. Hiatt were appointed to enquire into Richd. Merchant's claims to a certificate of removal to North Carolina or elsewhere. This John Hiatt was probably the John Hiatt Jr. of 1735. On February 28, 1782, Samuel Brockman Jr., Richard C. Webb, and William Thomas returned to the Orange County court an appraisement of the personal estate of John Hiatt, deceased. In 1795 Jonathan Hiatt and wife Mary, with others, of Fayette County, Ky., sold land on Terry's Run in Orange County, Va. It is not known that these Hiatts of later Orange were connected with the Hiatts of the Valley.
