    • (1) Macy, Harry, Jr., "Some New Light on Aeltje Braconie and Maria Badie," The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 142, No. 1 (January 2011), pp. 21, 32-36:

MARIA BADIE, daughter of Thomas and Aeltje (Braconie) Badie, was born say 1612 probably in Li??ge, and married first, say 1630 on Manhattan Island, JACOB JANSZEN VERDON, from La Rochelle, France, who died on Manhattan before November 1634. She married second on Manhattan, probably in 1635 (first child bom about 1636), WILLEM ADRIAENSZEN BENNET, a cooper from Helsing??r (Elsinore), Denmark, who died in the fall of 1643, probably in Gowanus, Long Island. Maria married third, in New Amsterdam by intention dated 9 October 1644, PAULUS VAN DER BEEK, from Bremen, Germany. Paulus died in 1680, presumably at their home in Gowanus, and Maria was last noted on record 28 February 1693/4, when "I Mary Baddie being the heirs [sic] of said land" signed (by mark) a confirmatory deed for half of the former Bredenbent farm. She almost certainly died before 30 December 1699 when her son Conradus Van der Beek executed another deed for the same property, calling himself "eldest son and heir at law" to his father, but not mentioning his mother.

Since Maria was a Walloon, her original given name was probably Marie. She is believed to have come to New Netherland with her parents in about 1628-29, married soon afterwards, and then lived with husband Jacob Verdon on Manhattan Island. In 1636 her second husband, Willem Bennet, acquired a large farm at Gowanus, and they also had a house on the Bever Gracht in New Amsterdam where Maria lived after Bennet died in 1643 and the Gowanus farm was destroyed. She inherited both properties, and brought them to her third marriage in 1644 with Paulus Van der Beek. By 1650 the Van der Beeks were again spending some time in Gowanus, as son Paulus Jr. was born there in that year, but they continued to own their New Amsterdam home. Paulus was a chirurgijn (surgeon), often recorded with the title "Mr." He was made a "small burgher" of New Amsterdam in 1657, and served the city as "farmer of the excise" [a tax collector] 1655-62 and as ferry-master between the city and Long Island. He and Maria appear to have made Gowanus their permanent home beginning in 1662.

After Paulus died, on 3 October 1684 "Maria Baddia" presented the Brooklyn church with a silver beaker (een zilvere beecker) to be used for serving Communion. The Old First Reformed Church still owns this beaker, which bears an inscription including the above date and the name "Maria Badye." It also owns a second, very similar beaker engraved with the same date but no name. The second beaker bears the mark of silversmith Jeurian Blanck, Jr., Maria's son-in-law, while the first beaker is unmarked.
