(2) Christine Adams, Message No. 140 posted to the Klingensmith Family Genealogy Forum on Genealogy.com on February 28, 2000: Isabelle "Belle" KIRKENDALL is also found with the surname KIRTENDAL. She appears with her husband in the 1880 Census, Jefferson Co., Oskaloosa Twp., KS. Calculated from that entry, I estimate her birth year to be 1844. She was the daughter of Andrew KIRTENDAL and Nancy MCCREERY. She md. William KLINGENSMITH, b. about 1838, the son of Adam KLINGENSMITH and Anna Mary KIRKLAND. In the 1880 census, an Abraham KLINGENSMITH, b. PA., age 24, relationship s.e. is living with this family. William KLINGENSMITH is noted in Beers, "Armstrong County, Her People Past and Present", 1914, pg. 790. I believe that history is available on the Armstrong Co., PA page. I show 4 children of William K. and Isabelle: Nancy E., b. abt. 1865 in KS; Andrew, b. abt 1866 in KS; Alvara, b. abt. 1870 in KS; and Wilbert, b. abt. 1879 in KS. Because of a citation on page 279 of "History of Kuykendall Family", believe Nancy b. abt. 1865 may have md. ? WILSON, and lived at 325 Klein St., Topeka, KS in 1913. (3) Kuykendall, George Benson, History of the Kuykendall Family, Portland, OR: Kilham Stationery & Printing Co., 1919, p. 279: There follows a letter from Mrs. Belle Klingensmith, of Oskaloosa, Kan. "I am the youngest living daughter of Andrew Kirkendall. My father's father was Jeremiah Kirkendall. He married twice. I do not know the maiden name of his first wife, but [grand]mother's maiden name was Catherine Everly. My father had twelve half brothers and sisters and two full brothers. I do not know the names of all of them, but there was Christopher, Samuel, and Jeremiah, and then father's two full brothers' names were Joseph and Leonard. My father was born in Allegheny county, Pa., and moved to Washington county, and there married my mother, Nancy McCreery. To them were born seven children, three boys and four girls. All have passed to the better world but three, myself, Mrs. Inry and Thomas Kirkendall, of Saltsburg, Pa. My father moved from Washington county, Pa., to Armstrong county, and there we were all born and raised." It seems to be almost absolutely certain that this Andrew Kirkendall, father of Mrs. Belle Klingensmith, was the cousin of Mrs. Margaret Klingensmith, of Lovilia, Iowa, daughter of Matthew Kirkendall, of the same place, who was brother of Elijah R. Kirkendall, of Douds, Iowa. If this be so, would establish a relationship between the families and descendants of T. R. Kirkendall, of Saltsburg, Pa., and the families and descendants of Matthew Kirkendall, of Lovilia, Iowa, and Elijah R. Kirkendall, of Douds, Iowa. Elijah R. has, or had a brother, Matthew Kirkendall, who lived for many years at Emporia, Kan. He has many descendants still living in that country and elsewhere in the west. There is a daughter of Mrs. Belle Klingensmith living at 325 Klein Street, Topeka, Kan., Mrs. Nannie Wilson. (4) A household headed by a woman whose surname begins with KLINGING is listed in the 1900 census of Oskaloosa Township, Jefferson County, KS. The rest of her name is covered by a blotch on the microfilm copy of the census page, and cannot be read. However, the compiler believes that this woman was Isabel N. KLINGENSMITH. This woman, who is believed by the compiler to have been Isabel N. KLINGENSMITH, is listed in the 1900 census as widow who was born in November 1844 and was then 55 years of age. According to the 1900 census, she was born in PA, her father was born in PA, and her mother was born in Ireland. Listed with this woman is her son, Roy W. KLINGINGSMITH, a farmer who was born in January 1879 and was then 21 years of age. According to the 1900 census, he was born in KS, and both of his parents were born in PA. (5) A household headed by Isabel N. KLINGINGSMITH is listed in the 1910 census of Oskaloosa Township, Jefferson County, KS. Isabel N. is listed in the 1910 census as a widow who was then 65 years of age; therefore, according to the 1910 census, she was born in about 1845. According to the 1910 census, she was born in PA, her father was born in PA, and her mother was born in Ireland. According to the 1910 census, she had theretofore given birth to 4 children, all of whom were then living. Listed with Isabel N. is her son, Roy W., a farmer who was then 31 years of age; therefore, according to the 1910 census, he was born in about 1879. According to the 1910 census, he was born in KS, and both of his parents were born in PA. Also listed with Isabel N. is an apparently unrelated hired hand. (6) Nancy KLINGENGSMITH is listed in a household headed by her son, Roy KLINGENSMITH, in the 1920 census of Oskaloosa Township, Jefferson County, KS. Nancy is listed in the 1920 census as a widow who was then 75 years of age; therefore, according to the 1920 census, she was born in about 1845. According to the 1920 census, she was born in PA, her father was born in PA, and her mother was born in Ireland. (7) Isabelle N. KLINGENSMITH is listed in a household headed by her grandson-in-law, Milton E. SAYLER, in the 1930 census of Ward 2, Topeka, Shawnee County, KS. Isabelle N. is listed in the 1930 census as a widow who was then 85 years of age; therefore, according to the 1930 census, she was born in about 1845. According to the 1930 census, she was born in PA, her father was born in PA, and her mother was born in Northern Ireland. According to the 1930 census, she was 18 years of age at her first marriage.
