Villa Soldier Survived Firing Squad, Gallows

      By PHIL KIMBALL
      Times Staff Writer

If anything good happened to him [Pedro Gonzalez] while he labored on [Pancho] Villa's "spread," it was his acquaintance with Beatriz Paez, Villa's niece. She had arrived on the ranch in 1922 when Villa sent for her in Torreon. Not long after Gonzalez entered the United States to stay, he met Beatriz and her brother while they were in El Paso.

What had earlier been mutual interest, blossomed into love. They were married in 1923, Beatriz later to bear him five children and share 21 years with him before her death.

[Note by compiler: There is persistent lore in the family of the compiler's son-in-law that the compiler's son-in-law is related to Pancho VILLA, the Mexican revolutionary and guerrilla leader who was originally named José-Doroteo ARANGO ARÁMBULA.

Beatriz PAEZ, a grandmother of the compiler's son-in-law, was described as Pancho VILLA's niece in an article which appeared in The El Paso Times on 11 April 1976. If Beatriz PAEZ had, in fact, been a niece of Pancho VILLA, as reported in that article, and if Beatriz had been related to Pancho VILLA by blood, then Beatriz's mother would probably have been a sister of Pancho VILLA. If Beatriz PAEZ had, in fact, been a niece of Pancho VILLA, as reported in that article, and if Beatriz had been related to Pancho VILLA by marriage, then Beatriz's father would probably have been a brother of Pancho VILLA. However, Beatriz's mother was not a sister of Pancho VILLA, and Beatriz's father was not a brother of Pancho VILLA. Therefore, Beatriz PAEZ was not a niece of Pancho VILLA, as reported in the article in The El Paso Times.

According to the baptismal certificate of a daughter of Beatriz PAEZ, Beatriz's mother was Petra ARÁMBULA, and Beatriz's father was Jésus PAEZ. Pancho VILLA had two sisters: (1) María-Ana ARANGO ARÁMBULA, who was born on 26 July 1879 in Río Grande, San Juan del Río, Durango, México, and married Anastacio FLORES; and (2) María-Martina ARANGO ARÁMBULA, who was born on 30 January 1882 in Río Grande, San Juan del Río, Durango, México. The compiler has no reason to believe that either of Pancho VILLA's sisters had a daughter named Beatriz PAEZ.

Pancho VILLA had two brothers: (1) José-Antonio ARANGO ARÁMBULA, who was born on 24 July 1880 in Potrero de Parra, San Juan Del Río, Durango, México; and (2) Hipólito VILLA, originally named José-Hipólito ARANGO ARÁMBULA, who was born on 3 July 1883 in Mesquite, San Juan Del Río, Durango, México. The compiler has no reason to believe that either of Pancho VILLA's brothers had a son named Jésus PAEZ.

If the compiler's son-in-law is, in fact, related to Pancho VILLA, then the compiler's son is probably related to Pancho VILLA through the ARÁMBULA family.

Beatriz PAEZ's husband was originally named Cirilo ARÁMBULA, but evidently changed his name to Pedro GONZ??LEZ in about 1931 in order to evade retribution from henchmen of Pancho VILLA.]
