- (1) Zabriskie, George Olin, "The Jan Cornelisen Van Hoorn/Van Horne Family," The American Genealogist, Vol. 46, No. 2 (April 1970), pp. 110, 115-116:
Gerrit Van Horne, son of Cornelis Jansen Van Hoorn . . . by his wife Anne Marie Jans, was born in New York and baptized there in the Dutch Reformed Church on 17 Dec. 1671, parents being noted as Corn. Janszen Hoorn [sic] and Anna Maria Jans; witnesses: Mr. Evert Pieterszen Keteltas and Hillegond Joris (child's paternal grandmother and her second husband). He was a merchant in the City of New York, and acquired real estate in the City, at Huntington, Long Island; in the present Westchester County, and in Middlesex and Somerset Counties, New Jersey. He joined the Dutch Reformed Church in New York on 26 Feb. 1696 and his wife joined on 3 Sept. 1696. He was a church warden in 1716. About 1703 he was living in the Dock Ward near his widowed mother and several brothers and sisters, with a household consisting of one male and also one female adult, one male and two female children, and three negroes. On 2 Oct. 1702 he joined with his brother John and others in pledging support to Lord Cornbury; in Feb. 1704/5 he was among those who petitioned for relief from the low exchange rates on foreign coins. On 20 Feb. 1711 he was one of the petitioners for protection against pirates. He was a captain of the militia and an assemblyman in 1722 and 1724, re-elected in 1737 but died 7 July 1737 before again taking office. His will was dated 28 Dec. 1730, proved in New York, 1 Feb. 1737 (NYW 3:232 f.). In it he mentioned his children: Cornelius, Catharine (wife of Dr. Archibald Fisher), Elizabeth (wife of Dominie Henry Boole), Anna (wife of John DeWitt) and Margaret; also three grandchildren, children of late daughter Anna Maria Beekman, Gerardus, Elizabeth and Cornelius Beekman. The executors were his son Cornelius and his surviving daughters. On 14 June 1693 Gerryt Van Hoorn and Altie Provoost obtained a marriage license. They were married 2 July 1693 in the Dutch Reformed Church, she as Elsie Provoost. She was born 15 March 1671, baptized in the New York Reformed Church, 22 March 1671, daughter of David Provoost Jr. and wife Tryntje Laurens. She probably died before her husband made his will in Dec. 1730 as she is not mentioned. On the Provoosts see NYGBR 6:5; 89:200.
