  • Name Jeremiah BLOOMFIELD
    Gender Male
    • (1) Jones, William, "Thomas Bloomfield of Woodbridge, N. J. and Some of His Descendants," The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 68, No. 1 (January 1937), pp. 58, 64-65:

JEREMIAH BLOOMFIELD . . . was born probably at Woodbridge about 1740. The writer has found no documentary evidence that he was a son of Benjamin Bloomfield . . . , but has arrived at this conclusion by a process of elimination of other families. Moreover, one of his descendants has in her possession a letter dated May 4, 1818, written by Gov. Joseph Bloomfield of New Jersey to Benjamin Bloomfield of Belmont County, Ohio (No. ii. below), in which he refers to the latter's father as Jeremiah Bloomfield, a cousin of his own father, Dr. Moses Bloomfield. Another Jeremiah Bloomfield . . . , also a cousin of Dr. Moses Bloomfield, died without issue in 1757. . . . This Jeremiah Bloomfield named two of his sons Benjamin and William, for his father and brother respectively if this conclusion is correct, and the names were repeated in succeeding generations, a fact that is usually significant.

He probably left home at an early age, which would account for his not being mentioned in Benjamin Bloomfield's will of 1768, and is afterwards found in Burlington, N. J., where Gov. Joseph Bloomfield lived, and in Philadelphia. He married in Burlington, 28 June 1773, ELIZABETH COWAN of Burlington (Register of St. Mary's Church). His name appears in a muster roll of Philadelphia militia in the service of the United States dated 12 July 1777 (Penna. Archives, ser. 1, vol. p. 115), and in a return of troops called into actual service in that month it is shown that he had moved to Burlington (ib., p. 357). His name again appears in a tax list in Philadelphia in 1783, and it was here that his son William was born in 1791. No record of his death has been discovered and no will of his is on record either in New Jersey or in Philadelphia.
