ACCORDING to family tradition the name Herff is derived from the property or place called Herve, the first of the name being a member of the ancient family De Crevecoeur. Their ancestor, a Protestant, of Brabant, fled from the unrelenting cruelty of the Duke of Alba, who was sent by King Philip at the head of an army into the Netherlands with unlimited power for the extirpation of heretics.

Jehan Heef (also Herff), b. 1546, d. 1615, m. Gertrude de Gornitz; he was first Burgemeister of Frankenthal. Their son Jean was a Brauherr. His son Johann Friedrich, Ratsherr zu Kreuznach, m. Susanna von Wingen. Their son Abraham Heinrich, Zollbereiter and Umgelder zu Kreuznach, m. Maria Margarit Wienold. Their son Johann Daniel, Burgemeister in St. Goer, m. Polixenia Christina Goedecke. Their son Johann Vollrath Friedrich, a Kriegsrat, m. Arnoldine Christine Reichmuthe Diesterweg; he was knighted, August 1, 1814, and first used the family coat-of-arms, two fleurs-de-lys and a rose. Their son Christian Samuel, who was Gerichtsrat to the Grand Duke, m. Eleonora Freiin von Meusebach. Their son Ferdinand Ludwig Johann Arnold, the oldest of their seven children, b. Nov. 29, 1820, in Darmstadt; m. Matilde Klingelhoefer of Giessen, May 1, 1849, at Darmstadt; and d. May 18, 1912, at Sari Antonio, Texas.

Ferdinand von Herff was educated "at the medical universities of Bonn and Berlin as well as Giessen. After graduating with honors [he received his degree in medicine in 1843] he went back to his home at Darmstadt where he was appointed assistant surgeon in the Prussian [Hessian] army," says Barnes, p. 256. He soon became displeased with political conditions in the German states. He secured leave from the army, and with a colony of Liberty Loving people of his own ideas, came to Texas. Dr. Herff's important activities in connection with the Darmstaedter Geselschaft and the Vierziger have already been mentioned. According to Biesele, he bad no intention "to promote any system, idea or principle of socialism, but simply to make the largest number of workers self-supporting in the least possible time and with the least possible expense." Dr. Herff returned to Germany, after a year in America, married, and brought his wife to Texas. They located first at New Braunfels; then removed to San Antonio, in 1850.

Dr. Herff was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He had an unusually brilliant mind. His personal friendship with such men as the Prince of Wied and Alexander von Humboldt, reflect favorably upon his personality and mental capacities. "Both as physician and surgeon he gained a wide reputation, and in the city of his adoption he was regarded as authority upon all matters pertaining to his profession, and no one ever stood higher in his profession in his own community than did Dr. Ferdinand Herff, for everybody had fullest confidence in him. As a citizen Dr. Herff enjoyed universal esteem and was widely popular.

"His heart was ever open to the poor and deserving and his services were ever at their command, without thought of further reward than their gratitude and the satisfaction of having been of service to them, much as his professional attention was in demand from those who were able to reward it handsomely he never turned away from the poor and needy or asked from such as these more than their thanks. Remembering his upright life and his large hearted charity and benevolence, it is not to be wondered that he held so large a place in the public esteem and affection," published the Express of May 19, 1912. Dr. Herff died May 18, 1912, aged 91 years (St. Mark's, A-vii, 336-337). He was Pres. of the Medical Ass'n of West Texas (1877-78). An excellent portrait of Dr. Herff was painted by the talented artist, Mrs. B. G. Duval, and was exhibited at her studios at the French Bldg. Mrs. Duval studied art in Duesseldorf, Germany, says the Free Press of May 10, 1888.

Dr. Ferdinand von Herff and his wife, Mathilde Klingelhoeffer ("the daughter of Wilhelm Klingelhoeffer, another of the judges of the supreme court and associate justice of the same tribunal with Dr. Herff's father"), an accomplished lady, a musician and a painter, raised their family in their home on the south side of Houston St., just east of Navarro St. She d. July 9, 1910, aged 87 years (St. Mark's, A-vii, 332-333).

      Their children were:

      1. John. . . .

      2. Ferdinand. . . .

      3. Charles, m. Elizabeth Durkee. . . .

      4. Adolf, surgeon and physician; m. 1st, Minna Kalteyer; and m. 2nd, Olga Ischer; by the 1st m. (St. Mark's, 1879, A-iii, 39). . . .

      5. August, architect; m. Minnie Duerler, daughter of Gustav A. Duerler (by his wife Lina), son of "one of the early custodians of San Pedro Park," a prominent citizen, chief of the old volunteer fire department, of Swiss origin. . . .

      6. William, baptised in the Lutheran Church, but confirmed at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, March 30, 1890; Pres. of the S. A. Loan & Trust Co.; m. Lula Addison, of Washington, D. C. . . .
