John Starnes (born ca 1745, died ca 1780 married Margaret Speck ca 1770. Their children:

      a. Frederick Starnes (born ca 1771, died 1850) married Magdaline Cline on July 3, 1794 (bond).

      b. Catherine Starnes (born ca 1774, died ca 1814) married John Wentz (born ca 1751, died ca 1827) on January 14, 1791 (bond).

      c. John Starnes, Jr. (born March 6, 1779, died December 20, 1855) married Mary Etta Hise (born April 10, 1784, died 1878) on July 20, 1802 (bond). For further information on the Hise family: Hise Family Association.

NOTE: John [Sr.] is established as a son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. by the will of Valentine Starnes and by the subequent deed conveying the lands in Pennsylvania left to him by his uncle. . . . Frederick Starnes is specifically mentioned in the records of the estate of John Starnes [Sr.], as well in numerous deeds in Clark County, Kentucky, as being the eldest son of John Starnes [Sr.]. Also mentioned in the records of the estate of John Starnes [Sr.] is John Wentz, husband of Catherine Starnes. The records of the Starnes family of Buncombe County state that John Starnes, Jr., was the son of John Starnes [Sr.], and that he had two siblings, Frederick and Christina. The estate of John Starnes [Sr.] was opened in 1781, but was not closed until 1802, indicating that it could not be closed until John Starnes, Jr. came of age.

      Capt John Starnes
      Birth: 1745, Virginia, USA
      Death: 1780 (aged 34-35)
      Burial: Unknown

John Starnes was the eldest son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c.1724-1779) and his wife Mary, possibly Carlock. His paternal grandparents were Frederick Staring/Starns/Starnes (c. 1700-1775) and his wife Mary Goldman, who had immigrated to New York as children in 1710, settled briefly on the Juniata River in PA, and came to Virginia by about 1743. John was born in old Augusta County, Virginia and came to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina as a young man.

He rose to prominence in his community, and was a judge in the Mecklenburg County Courts. He served as a Captain in the second Mecklenburg Militia Regiment in the Revolutionary War. (I believe he lived in the section of Mecklenburg County which later became Cabarrus Co.) Most sources state that he died at the Battle of Camden, SC in 1780. However, I have found some indication that he may still have been alive in 1782. Nevertheless, the statement that "he died in service of his country" is probably quite accurate.

John married Margaret Speck around 1770, and they had at least three children: Frederick Starnes III (c. 1771-c. 1851, m. Magdaline Cline), Catherine Starnes (c. 1774-c.1814, m. John Andrew Wentz, Jr.), and John Starnes, Jr. (6 March 1779-20 Dec. 1855, m. Mary Etta Hise).

I believe there were probably other children. I have two other possible sons provisionally attributed to John in my notes: Jacob Starnes (c.1772-1816, m. Gloria Starns) and Joseph Starnes (c. 1775-aft. 1850, m. Susannah Ury). Both these men were married in Cabarrus Co. in 1794, and their marriage bonds were signed by Frederick Starnes, presumably Frederick Starnes III.

There is a memorial stone for John at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, but I do not know if he is actually buried there.

And there has been some confusion between this John Starnes and his first cousin, also named John Starnes, his first cousin, eldest son of his uncle Leonard Starnes Find A Grave # 54787084
