It seems conclusive that Henry [Chiles, Sr.] married twice, since there is proof that it was his wife, Mary Howle, who had married a second time, and whose estate was settled in Caroline County in 1771. While it may be possible that she married and had a child by 1698, then lived until 1771, it is not likely. The maiden name of Mary Chiles is not known; however, there has been conjecture that she was a Winston. It is possible that she was a daughter of William Winston, but no evidence has been found to substantiate this. It is known that Henry owned land near Winston land, but the names of the Chiles and Winstons were not listed in the same precincts for processioning.
One of the reasons given for the assumption that Henry's wife was a Winston, was the naming of their children. The names were Biblical names, and it was thought that Mary may have been a Quaker. It does not seem that the earliest generations of Winstons were members of the Society of Friends. If Mary was a Quaker, Henry did not follow her in her beliefs, for he continued faithful to the Church of England until his death. He was, continuously and faithfully, a member of the vestry. Several of Henry's children later embraced the Quaker faith, but some did not, and those who did, seem to have "married into it". . . .
Henry made his will on April 29, 1718. The will is not extant, only the fact that he made it, later recorded in a deed in Orange County, by Mary Chiles Howle. Mary Howle deeded slaves left her by the will of Henry Chiles, father of Malachi, to her son, Malachi. There were fifteen slaves named. Henry Chiles last attended a vestry meeting on March 30, 1719, and died before the following February 27,1719[/20]. Mary Chiles was identified by name, and as Widd. Chiles in the processioning returns of that date. Henry was replaced on the vestry in October 1720, by David Meriwether.
Mary Chiles was listed only the one year, 1720, in the processioning returns. It is known that she married a Mr. Howle. He was apparently not a land owner in St. Paul's Parish at that time, for the name Howle (or any variant spelling) has not been found in the vestry book. While there were Howles in New Kent County and in St. Peter's Parish, the husband of Mary Chiles has not been identified.
Thomas Partridge and Company in Hanover County kept careful accounts (1734-1756), and he recorded the accounts of Mr. Robert Howle: "1738, 1 fine Hatt No. 8, 1 pr. mens shoes, 1 pr. shoe buckles; June 22, pd. Malachi Chiles, 1 hatt no. 6; Aug. 14, items dd Malachi Chiles." Robert Howle may have been Malachi's stepfather.
Apparently, Mary Chiles Howle later lived in Orange County. She had an estate in Caroline County that was to be appraised, in January 1771. "John Thompson, William Hewlett and Philip Estes were ordered to appraise the estate of Mary Howle, deceased, according to law". There is no description of Mary's estate in Caroline County. At the time of her death she had many grandchildren living in the county. Her children: MICAJAH, MANOAH, Malachi, Ann and Agatha had all died before her death.
