    • (1) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD, Gateway Press, 1983, pp. 211-212:

On February 20, 1818 or 1820 Benjamin [Starnes] married Mary Magdaline Lafeng, who was called "Polly," in Lincoln (now Catawba) County before Joseph Toranu, J.P. For his services, Ben's widow received an eighty-acre bounty land warrant some years after his death in March, 1829 in the county in which they were married. Ben and Polly had three or four children. She was born in 1794 and was still living in Catawba County in the spring of 1855.

      (2) A household headed by Mary STARNES is listed in the 1840 census of Upper Regiment, Lincoln County, NC. [Her surname is listed as STARNER in the index to the 1840 census.]

Listed in Mary's household are 1 free white male between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 15 years of age; and 1 free white female between 30 and 40 years of age.

Assuming that Mary is the free white female listed in the 1840 census as then being between 30 and 40 years of age, she would have been born between 1800 and 1810, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that the other persons in Mary's household are children of Mary, those children would have consisted of 1 son (which son would have been born between 1825 and 1830, according to the 1840 census) and 1 daughter (which daughter would have been born between 1825 and 1830, according to the 1840 census).

      (3) Catawba County, NC was formed from Lincoln County, NC on 12 December 1842.

      (4) A household headed by Mary Ann STARNES is listed in the 1860 census of Catawba County, NC. [Her surname is listed as STAINER in the index to the 1860 census.]

Mary Ann is listed in the 1860 census as a person who was then 68 years of age; therefore, according to the 1860 census, she was born in about 1792. According to the 1860 census, she was born in NC.

Listed with Mary Ann is her granddaughter [?], Debora C. STARNES, who was then 7 years of age; therefore, according to the 1860 census, she was born in about 1853. According to the 1860 census, she was born in NC.
