  Notes	(1) Merrill, William Ernest, Captain Benjamin Merrill and the Merrill Family of North Carolina, Penrose, NC: 1935, pp. 18-19: Jonathan, the youngest son of Capt. Benjamin and Jemima Merrill, married on September 25, 1787, Nancy Elliot of the Potts Creek section of Rowan County and settled in this section. They had one son and one daughter when the 1790 census was taken. He was "Captain Merrill" and tax collector for his section from 1809 through 1813. He owned much land and was evidently a man of considerable wealth. (2) A household headed by Jonathan MERREL is listed in the 1840 census of Lincoln County, TN. Listed in Jonathan's household are 1 free white male between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white male between 70 and 80 years of age; 2 free white females between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white female between 15 and 20 years of age; and 1 free white female between 70 and 80 years of age. Assuming that Jonathan is the free white male listed in the 1840 census as then being between 70 and 80 years of age, he would have been born between 1760 and 1770, according to the 1840 census. Assuming that Jonathan's wife is the free white female listed in the 1840 census as then being between 70 and 80 years of age, she would have been born between 1760 and 1770, according to the 1840 census. The other persons listed in Jonathan's household seem to have then been too young to have been children of Jonathan and/or his wife.
