      Birchwood had several doctors during its earlier years. The first known doctor was Dr. Sterling T. Smith, who served the community from 1858-60. Dr. Thomas Jefferson DeFriese, who practiced from 1860-65, was the next doctor. He was also a surgeon in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Other doctors who practiced between the war and 1900 were Drs. Manuel Jackson Lewis, Newton E. Knox, Pinkney McNabb, and Samuel Lee. During the early 1900's Drs. T. B. Weire, Henry DeFriese, J. C. Gillett, J. P. Houston, C. F. Taliaferro, and a Dr. Rogers were practicing there. Dr. James Goodner, who lived in nearby Meigs County, and Dr. James H. Holman, a Meigs County native, also called upon Birchwood residents. . . .

Mrs. Dr. Lee moved to Bradley Co. last Friday Miss Lorinda (Rindy) Knox moved to Meigs to teach school Rev. Andy Campbell (Cumberland Presbyterian preacher) preached at the M E Church at 11 o'clock Rev. R. T. Howard preached at the Baptist Church in the evening . . . Mon. Mar. 14 . . . Pleasant Spring weather I Bought J.J.M.'s (Judge Jethro Munger's) stock of goods in Birchwood been invoicing today . . . Wed. 16 . . .
