EDMUND PAUL MELL SR.
OCTOBER 3RD 1912 - MAY 5TH 2004
In 1924, at age eleven, Eddie MeII stepped off a train and instantly fell in love with Phoenix. Born in Minneapolis, MN Oct. 3rd, 1912, he later moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio in 1918. In Cleveland, his father Frank was manager of General Electric's Mazdas light bulb factory. After his father contracted tuberculosis in 1924, the family made the move to Phoenix. Ed attended three grade schools there along with Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix College and Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe. In 1937 he married and began his family with Gertrude Sargent of Mesa. From 1944-46 he served with the Army during W.W.II in Italy and was boarding a ship for the Pacific when the war ended.
After returning to Arizona Ed started a construction company with his father and brother Gordon, building low income housing on land that is now part of the Sky Harbor Airport. Later, he became editor of the Arizona Beverage Journal and Exec. Secretary for the Arizona Wholesale Beer and Liquor Association. While there his many duties included running conventions, which were always imbued with his great wit, story telling and sense of humor. He was a long standing member of the Camelback Kiwanis Club where he worked on many charity drives and helped to build cabins for The Campfire Girls Camp near Prescott.
Above all else, Ed was a great husband, father, and grandfather. Once when asked what his hobbies were he replied "my family". He and his wife Gert, raised three sons and were always supportive of their children's life decisions. As one friend said, the MeII boys had a "Leave it to Beaver" childhood. Ed and Gert were married for 66 years and he was a resident of Arizona for 80.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude, sons Frank and Ed Jr., granddaughter Georgia and grandsons Taylor and Carson. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Anna Mell, brother Gordon, and son Lee. A special thanks to all his care givers including Wanda Carter, Lupe Maranda and Hospice of the Valley.
Services will be held on Friday, May 14th, 10:00 A.M. at Church of the Beatitudes, 555 W. Glendale Ave., 85021, phone 602-264-1221. Any memorial contributions may be made in his name to one of two entities: Hospice of the Valley or the Camelback Kiwanis Club.
