    • (1) John William Vail :

WILLIAM VAIL, son of Peter Jennings Vail and Anna Applegate, was born on 18 Dec 1821 in Green, Hamilton County, OH. He died on 11 Oct 1893 in Albion, Boone County, NE. He married ANNA LETTA MOORE on 7 Mar 1848 in Franklin County, IN.

WILLIAM VAIL was buried in Moccasin, Effingham County, IL (Blue Point Cemetery).

Descendant Arvilla "Villa" Vail Miller supplied the following information:

"William Vail ran away to seek his fortune on board a ship on the Ohio River when he was 14 (about 1835), but he took his Bible with him (Villa Vail Miller came into possession of this Bible). It shows evidence of being worn and wet. He he found himself given the job of cabin boy. He knew nothing of the water or the ways of a ship, and being a lively youngster, he immediately began to ask questions until he nearly drove the sailors mad. They heard why, why, why morning, noon, and night. He was growing rapidly and the Captain soon decided William was husky enough to become a roustabout down in the hold and heave freight. By virture of the fact that he could read, the Captain assigned William to read the labels and sort the pieces of freight as they were brought into the hold.

"By the time he was 18 he rose from cabin boy to First Mate on a steam boat running from Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio to Vicksburg, Mississippi, by virture of the fact that he could read and write. As First Mate, he often found himself the commanding officer of the ship.

"Shortly after this, William decided he'd had enough of ship duty, and he became manager of a coaling station on the bank of the Mississippi. He had charge of a wood yard on an island in the Mississippi River near Natchez, Mississippi. Only a "coaling station" as it was called, was really a fueling station, and he sold wood to the boats passing up and down the river. He was very proud of his job, for he earned $40 a month, and he said in his later years 'Not many boys earned $40 a month at the age of 19'. [Sounds like too much pay for the 1840s.]

"Quitting the river on account of sickness, he went to Franklin Co., Indiana, where he taught school and farmed."

His bothers, Calvin and David, as well as his uncle James Applegate, had already or would eventually settle in Salt Creek Township, Franklin County, IN. It was there that he married in 1848, at age 26.
The 1850 Census for Salt Creek Township, Franklin County, IN identifies William Viel (age 29), Ann Viel (age 21), and Walter Viel (2 months), showing the parents both born in OH and Walter born in IN. Walter's age is not correct by several months, but it certainly shows that he was born in 1850, which emphatically contradicts conflicts in information from other sources.

On 22 June 1853, William Vail purchased 40 acres of property [Section 4, Township 09N, Range 04E] in the southern portion of Holland Township, Shelby County, IL. It is reasonable to conclude that this is the location of the birth of son John Elmer Vail, first IL-born child, on 15 February 1855. Thus the family likely moved to IL between mid-1853 and the end of 1854. The parcel was purchased using a military bounty land warrant instead of cash for payment; this warrant was most likely purchased from somebody else.

On 8 August 1853, William Vail purchased 80.74 acres of property [Section 31, Township 09N, Range 05E] in Banner Township, the northern portion of Effingham County, IL. (160 acres of property "across the street" in Liberty Township is purchased in 1871 - eventually becomes the property owned by great grandchildren Clifford and Delmar Vail). When this purchase was made, William Vail is shown as living in Fayette County, IL -County located immediately west of Effingham County.

The 1860 Census for Holland Township, Shelby County, IL, taken 26 June, shows the William Vail family under the listing "Wm. Vales." The complete listing: Wm. Vales [39, b. OH, farmer, real property value $3600, personal property value $850], Anne Vales [30, b. OH], Walter S. Vales [11, b. IN], Mary A. Vales [7, b. IN], John E. Vales [5, b. IL], Minerva Vales [1, b. IL]. Living 9 households away is the probable family of Anne Moore Vail's widowed mother Sophia Moore and a number of probable siblings, including Sarah Jane Moore.

The 1860 Census Non-Population Schedules for William Vail [shown as Wm. Vale] of Holland Township on pages 19-20, line 38 shows the following: 80 acres improved; 220 acres unimproved; $3,600 cash value of the farm; $75 value of farming implements and machinery; 5 horses, 2 milk cows, 4 working oxen, 1 other cattle, 14 swine; $610 value of livestock; produced 30 bushels of wheat, 300 bushels of Indian corn, 40 bushels of oats, 20 bushels of Irish potatoes; 100 lbs butter; 15 gal molasses; 50 lbs honey; $90 value of animals slaughtered.

The 1870 Census for Summit Township, Effingham County, IL identifies William [age 51, born in OH], Ann [age 40, born in OH], Walter [age 21, born in IN], Mary Ann [age 18, born in IN], John E. [age 16, born in IL], Minnerva [age 12, born in IL], Sarah [age 10, born in IL], Henry [age 7, born in IL], Albert [age 5, born in IL], and Viola [age 1, born in IL].

On 30 September 1871, William Vail purchased 40 acres of property [Section 36, Township 09N, Range 04E] in Liberty Township, the northern portion of Effingham County, IL. This property is "across the street" from the "original 1853 Effingham County purchase" and eventually is owned in the late 1900s by great-grandchildren Clifford and Delmar Vail.

On 30 November 1871, William Vail purchased 160 acres of property [Section 36, Township 09N, Range 04E] in Liberty Township, the northern portion of Effingham County, IL. This property is "across the street" from the "original 1853 Effingham County purchase" and eventually is owned in the late 1900s by great-grandchildren Clifford and Delmar Vail.

The 1880 Census for Summit Township, Effingham County, IL identifies William [age 59, born in OH, farmer], Ann L. [age 49, born in OH, keeping house], children Mary A. [age 27, born in IL], Minerva [age 21, born in OH], Henry [age 17, born in OH], Clarence [age 8, born in OH], and grandson Frank [age 3, born in OH].
