NOTES:
(The following paragraph has been taken from the "Introduction" of the Aug. 1962 "abbreviated family history" written by John M. ANDERSON, Tulsa, OK. Mr. ANDERSON is a descendant of "Scotch John" and his second wife, Catharine BROOKIE.)
"The patriarch of our Anderson family, John Anderson, acquired the nickname "Scotch John" when he moved to Jefferson County, Indiana in 1812. Even though the total population of his township was only about 500, another John Anderson had recently moved there who was nearly his same age and belonged to the same church congregation. But because the other John Anderson was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, while our John Anderson was an immigrant from Scotland, our ancestor became known as 'Scotch John' Anderson by the inhabitants of the county, in order to differentiate between the two men..."

Per the research of John M. ANDERSON, "Scotch John" was the oldest of the nine children of Thomas and Elizabeth (BECK) ANDERSON, natives of Dumfriesshire, SCOTLAND. The father was a tenant farmer in the parish of JOHNSTONE, West Blackburn, Dumfries. The "Register of Births By Proof" documented at Johnstone School House 22 Oct. 1801 indicates that all of the nine children were born at West Blackburn.
By 1810, "Scotch John" was involved in property deeds recorded in Greene County, OH. In 1812 he purchased from the U.S., 160 acres in Jefferson County, IN, just one mile south of where the Carmel Presbyterian Church stood. He appeared on the tax lists of Jefferson County in 1815. In 1820, "Scotch John," his wife, five male children between the ages of 0-16 and one female under the age of 10 were enumerated in the county. One person in the household is "engaged in the pursuit of agriculture" and one of these persons is "a foreigner not naturalized."
Later research findings indicate that "Scotch John" was probably the first of this ANDERSON family to immigrate from SCOTLAND. His parents, two unmarried sisters and youngest brother are thought to have arrived from the family home in about 1818.
At least the first three of "Scotch John's" sons are thought to have been born in OH. Robert, the fourth son born to John's first marriage was born in IN about 1814. There was another son and possibly a daughter born to this union after Robert's birth.
After the death of his first wife, John married Catharine BROOKIE in Jefferson County, IN. This couple had six more children. The family left Jefferson County in about July of 1829 to relocate in Montgomery County, IN. By 1835 the family had again relocated, this time to Tippecanoe Township in Carroll County, where they remained until after John's death. John wrote his last will and testament shortly after the 1854 epidemic of Asiatic cholera which took the lives of so many people in the area; however, he lived until June, 1870.
