- (1) Robert R. Johns' pedigree, http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com:
The subject of the antecedents of Jane Fox Johns has been somewhat controversial. There are several different Fox pedigrees from different sources with slightly different connections. I have done a lot of research on this subject and have drawn my own conclusions which may not be accurate and probably don't reflect the consensus of other researchers whom I know. I am copying them on this message to let them know my final feelings on the subject.
I am copying below excerpts from "Memorial to Henry Fox, Gentleman, of 'Huntington,' King William County, Virginia," by George H. S. King, published on pgs 713-725 of "Genealogies of Virginia Families," vol I A-Ge. This work comes close to confirming the results of additional research that I have done in the image files of the Colonial Records of the Library of Virginia, "English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records" by Louis des Cognets, Jr., and "Virginia Gleanings" by Lothrop Withington.
pg. 715: (Title) "Captain John Fox, The Immigrant." The founder of the Fox family in Virginia was Captain John Fox, who commanded several trading vessels plying between England and Virginia. It is not positively ascertained that he lived in Virginia, but the writer is inclined to believe he did. ( As am I. RJ ) He was a member of the Fox family of Great Missenden Parish in Bucks County, England whose coat of arms appear on the memorial to Henry Fox. It seems more than likely that Captain John Fox was the son of Thomas Fox, a member of the London Company in 1608, who resided in London, England.
The minutes of the Council and General Court of the Colony of Virginia, evince this court order:
"At a Court held on October 14, 1625, being prsent Sr. Francis Wyatt, Knight, Governor, etc. Captain Francis West, Captain Roger Smith, Captain Ralph Hamer, Captain Samuel Matthews,Mr. William Cleyborne. It is ordered yt the p,vost Marshall shall receave all such debts and tobacco as shall be dew to Elizabeth Ffox, widow, and to take the charge of sendinge of the same to her unto England, and receave bill of ladinge for ye same, and to pay such debts as ffox did owe in this country."
The same manuscript page 76, records this order, dated 28 November 1625:
"Yt it is ordered yt the pvost marshall shall give a discharge to the purser of the Elizabeth for the receipte of these goods wch he hath receaved of John Fox and John Pickernell, who died at sea, And to take charge of sendinge the tobacco made of these goods into England." (The Virginia Colonial Records Data Base confirms that Captain John Fox was the master of the ship "Constant Elizabeth" as late as 1664.)
"It thus appears that Mrs, Elizabeth Fox was the widow of one who was intimately associated with the affairs of the Colony, and therefor Thomas Fox of the London Co. The fact that her husband's name is not specified is evidence of this association, hence there was no need to specify it." (I would have preferred to see her husband's name specified. I have chcked a copy of the 1609 Charter of the Virginia Company of London. The name of Thomas Fox is listed as a share holder, RJ)
"At the time of his father's death, in 1625 John Fox was a young man, sailing on one of his father's ships, the "Elizabeth," named for his mother. He also acted as agent for his father, Thomas Fox, in trading with the Colony". (This is verified by many records in the LVA Colonial Records Files which have Captain John Fox sailing in the "Constant Elizabeth" as master 1654, and various other ships as master the "Thomas and Ann" July 1655, the "Mary" 1676".
It appears by these references, quoted by Mr George H. S. King, that John Pickernell, who died at sea on a voyage with John Fox to Virginia, was the father of Elizabeth Pickernell Fox, who was the mother of John Fox and the wife of Thomas Fox of the London Company.
