The Colonial Records Project Files of the Libary of Virginia have several mentions of William Johns during the early part of the 1600s. He was associated with the tobacco merchant firm Motley and Johns and was active in importing tobacco from Virginia and distributing it throughout England and Wales through a chain of retail distributors, many of whom had the surname Johns.
